The empowerment of women has been shown to have important positive effects on environmental sustainability, for example slowing human population growth and reducing daily dependencies on scarce environmental resources. Our microfinance project is designed to help give Maasai women a competitive edge within the village economy. Currently, APW is working with a women’s cooperative mill, providing diesel to the group at city prices (much lower than the cost of fuel purchased in the village itself). This helps the women to maintain their profits while offering their services at slightly lower prices than other mills in the area.
