Maasailand Lion Conservation Program

Based in the Tarangire ecosystem, also known as the Maasai Steppe, this program focuses on the conservation of one of Tanzania’s most threatened lion populations. Because lions range widely outside of the narrow Tarangire National Park, conflict with Maasai pastoralists and their livestock is frequent and hostile. APW’s unique approach to this conflict integrates village-based lion monitoring, conservation education, lion-livestock conflict prevention and habitat planning with the aim of improving the lives of lions and people alike.
