APW’s Living Walls project combines a variety of our program objectives, including green design, the conservation of lions and the reduction of human-carnivore conflicts. Confronted with high incidences of nighttime attacks on corralled cattle, goats and sheep by lions and other large carnivores, APW has been working in partnership with villagers to develop cost-effective measures to prevent animals from penetrating the “boma” wall. Our unique Living Walls use chain link fencing to reinforce walls traditionally planted with indigenous Commiphora africana trees in order to protect livestock. The use of live trees as fence posts enhances sustainability by reducing the need to repetitively cut thorn trees for “boma” maintenance or to use poles trucked in from Arusha (which eventually rot and need to be replaced) as fence posts. As the trees grow, they also add height to the fence, preventing animals from jumping into the corrals.
