How We Work

The African People & Wildlife Fund is working towards a vision where healthy village communities live among and alongside healthy wildlife populations. APW has identified five key strategies for achieving its goal:
s-collaborative-conservation
Today, conserving Africa’s rich wildlife heritage depends on integrating the needs of both people and wildlife. APW’s wildlife conservation programs emphasize applied projects that have demonstrable conservation significance for local communities.
s-habitat-conservation
Habitat loss and fragmentation are two of the greatest threats facing Africa’s wildlife species. Whether we are working on stream restoration, reforestation or the protection of wildlife habitats within village lands, our emphasis is on collaboration.
s-education
At APW, we are dedicated to empowering the next generation of environmental leaders by providing educational opportunities for both children and adults in the rural villages where we work.
s-conflict-prevention
Many of Africa’s wildlife populations range outside of protected areas, where their conservation depends on a peaceful coexistence with people. APW’s is empowering villagers to prevent attacks on livestock by lions, leopards, hyenas, cheetahs and wild dogs.
Local Capacity
We believe empowering local people to conserve biodiversity goes hand in hand with strategies to alleviate poverty. This means recognizing important linkages between environmental conservation and village development.
